DNS propagation is the time it takes for DNS changes — such as new nameservers or A records — to update across internet servers worldwide. This affects every web hosting customer in Sri Lanka and globally.
Why propagation happens
DNS servers cache (store) old records for a period defined by TTL (Time To Live). Until caches expire, some visitors may still see the old configuration.
Typical timelines
- Nameserver change: 2–24 hours (up to 48 hours in rare cases)
- A/CNAME record change: 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on TTL
- MX record change: 1–24 hours for email routing updates
What you can do
- Lower TTL before making changes (if your DNS provider allows)
- Clear your local DNS cache or test in a private browser window
- Use online DNS checkers to monitor global propagation
- Wait 24 hours before assuming a change failed
